Leaked Footage Shows Google’s Desktop Android Running Chrome and Windowed Apps

An early, never-public demo of Google’s desktop-focused Android interface has leaked online, revealing a conventional desktop layout with windowed apps, a centered taskbar, and the full Chrome browser with extension support.

The footage reportedly came from a Chromium bug report that included two videos. Google has since restricted access to the report, but the clips already circulated and offer the clearest look yet at Android’s PC iteration.

What the leak reveals?

The build, developed under the codename Alumunium OS, resembles a standard desktop operating system more than a mobile shell. Apps open in separate windows, and a centered taskbar sits at the bottom of the screen showing pinned and running programs.

A status bar runs along the top edge displaying the clock and indicators for battery and Wi-Fi signal. The videos also show Google Chrome running as a full desktop browser, complete with extension support.

Interface details and differences from tablet Android

The desktop variant keeps a similar taskbar to Android tablet layouts but uses a taller status bar at the top. The mouse cursor has been adjusted for the desktop environment and features a visible trailing tail.

Window controls for minimize, maximize, and close resemble those used in Chrome OS, suggesting Google is reusing familiar interaction patterns for desktop users.

Test hardware and software identification

The person who posted the report ran the test build on an HP Elite Dragonfly 13.5 equipped with a 12th-generation Intel Core (Alder Lake) processor from 2021.

The operating system self-identified as Android 16 in the build shown in the videos.

When we might see this officially?

Given the state of the leaked build, it seems likely Google plans a formal reveal sometime this year. The company typically announces major platform updates at its I/O developer conference, which usually takes place in May.
