When shoppers pick smart home gear today, they look for ecosystem labels like “Works with Apple Home” or “Works with Google Home.” The Connectivity Standards Alliance introduced the Matter standard in 2022 to make that choice easier and to unify how devices from different makers talk to each other. In short, a Matter-capable device should plug into almost any smart home setup.
Certification is currently a headache
Right now, getting a device fully supported across ecosystems is cumbersome. Manufacturers must pass separate certification tests for each platform even if the product already supports Matter.
Big change from Apple, Google and Samsung

That is about to change. Apple, Google and Samsung will begin accepting Matter certification test results from the Alliance Interop Lab. In practice, this means a manufacturer that certifies a gadget for Matter via that lab will no longer need to repeat separate tests with those companies. Submitting the Interop Lab results will automatically grant the necessary certifications from the three platforms.
Faster launches and clearer labeling
The move will significantly speed up and simplify bringing new smart home products to market for manufacturers. Consumers benefit as well; Matter support will become a more reliable sign that a device will work in their chosen ecosystem.
What this could mean for packaging and stores?
It may also tidy up labeling on boxes and in online stores. Today multiple “works with” badges often clutter packaging, even when a single “Works with Matter” label could suffice.
