Google I/O Returns May 20–21, But Android 16 Gets Its Own Spotlight a Week Early

Google I/O will take place May 20–21 this year, sticking to its familiar late-spring spot on the calendar. The conference opens with the customary two-hour keynote, followed by breakout sessions, workshops, and developer meetups.

Like previous years, Google is expected to highlight updates across services, operating systems, apps, and AI. But this year the company is shifting the format slightly by giving Android its own dedicated event the week before I/O.

The Android show comes before I/O

Google I/O Returns May 20–21, But Android 16 Gets Its Own Spotlight a Week Early

Instead of saving Android announcements for the main I/O keynote, Google will hold a special Android-focused program on May 13. Sameer Samat, president of the Android Ecosystem division, will host “The Android Show: I/O Edition” to unveil new features and innovations in Android 16.

The event will stream live on YouTube and is scheduled to begin at 19:00 local time.

Why Google is separating Android news?

The Android Show is a regular video series produced by the Android Developers team, with new episodes typically released about four times a year. It covers all things Android and has in the past been scheduled after I/O.

This year’s decision to air the episode a week early likely frees up space in the I/O program for other announcements. It may also reflect shifts in Android’s release calendar.

Android 16 may arrive sooner than expected

Historically, Google used I/O to unveil upcoming Android versions and then pushed early public beta builds after the conference. For Android 16, Google has been testing the platform for several months.

Because Android 16 is already well into testing, Google may release the final build shortly after I/O rather than following the old pattern of unveiling at I/O and releasing betas afterward.

What to watch for?

Expect the May 13 Android Show to focus squarely on Android 16 features and developer-facing improvements. The main I/O keynote on May 20 will likely cover broader product and AI news across Google’s ecosystem.

Developers and consumers should mark both dates: May 13 for Android-specific details and May 20–21 for the full slate of Google’s platform and service updates.
