Microsoft Fixes Windows 10 ESU Registration Bug, Pushes Critical April Patch

Microsoft created a dedicated registration flow inside Windows Update so Windows 10 devices can keep receiving updates after official support ended. Some PCs, however, could not be enrolled at all because a bug prevented the registration process from completing.

Patch released after the bug was acknowledged

Microsoft Fixes Windows 10 ESU Registration Bug, Pushes Critical April Patch

Microsoft acknowledged the problem this week and issued a fix. The timing is important: on Tuesday the company shipped a cumulative update that addresses 63 security vulnerabilities.

One zero-day among the fixes

One of the vulnerabilities fixed in this release is reported to be actively exploited, classifying it as a zero-day. Machines enrolled in the Extended Security Updates program receive this update automatically, and the download is roughly 200 MB in size.

EU users can enroll for free with a Microsoft account

European users can sign up for ESU at no charge, but they must use a Microsoft account for the registration itself. The account is required only for enrollment; the PC can continue to be used with a local account after registration.

Deciding whether to enroll

If you are still running Windows 10 without ESU, enrolling is worth considering given the breadth of fixes in this cumulative update and the presence of an actively exploited vulnerability.
