Microsoft is restructuring Windows to act as a platform for artificial intelligence that spans software, cloud services, chips, and PC hardware. The company says only by integrating AI across those layers will users get the full benefits of the technology.
Over time Windows is expected to evolve into a smart assistant that understands context and helps businesses complete tasks faster and more securely.
Agent-based operating system

Microsoft plans to turn Windows into an “agentic” operating system, where authorized agents can perform operations using their own logic, memory, and decision-making abilities. These agents can operate autonomously within limits set by the user, accessing apps, files, and system functions as needed.
Each agent will get its own workspace so it can interact with files and applications in isolation without affecting other parts of the system.
How users will access agents?

Agents will be reachable in multiple ways, including directly from the taskbar or through an Ask Copilot feature that ties together system search, voice controls, and agent access. Through Copilot, users will be able to assign tasks to agents such as “write an email with selected content,” “summarize a document,” or “analyze content in a chosen folder.”
The progress and context of agents’ work will be visible directly on the taskbar.
Enterprise management and scale
A Microsoft-sponsored IDC study projects that about 1.3 billion agents will exist by 2028. To help enterprises deploy and manage them, Microsoft is building Agent 365, an app intended as a single source of truth for all agents, controlling access, providing visualizations, and offering advanced analytics on usage.
Agents will also be integrated into Windows 365 so companies can scale them across cloud-based PCs. Microsoft says selected AI startups are already using an agent-capable version of Windows 365 in the public preview, and a preview of classic Windows 11 with agent support is available starting today.
Windows 11 features for everyday users?
Microsoft is also rolling out several AI-driven improvements for regular Windows 11 users:
- Writing assistance — rewriting and composing text in any text field across apps.
- Outlook summaries — automatic summarization of emails inside Outlook.
- Auto-generated image text — Office apps will create descriptive text for images to improve document accessibility.
- Fluid dictation — AI-powered speech-to-text that corrects grammar, punctuation, and filler words in real time.
All of the above features will work on any PC, not just Copilot+ devices. Copilot+ machines get faster processing and additional perks, such as offline writing assistance. These features are available now in preview.
